Marriage — God’s Plan for Human Flourishing

Have you ever wondered if marriage is truly God’s plan — or just a cultural idea? In this message from our marriage series, Coco and Martins Osawe explore one of life’s most foundational questions: “Is marriage really God’s idea?” At Osawe Family Ministries, we believe it is — and that it was part of God’s divine design for love, unity, and human flourishing. Marriage was never a social experiment; it was woven into God’s creation blueprint from the very beginning.
1. God’s Original Design
In Genesis 1:26–29, we read: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness...’ So God created mankind in His own image, male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply...’”This passage reveals something profound — God Himself initiated marriage. He created male and female with a divine purpose and blessed their union to flourish and reflect His image on earth.

2. Made in His Image
When God said, “Let us make man in our image,” He wasn’t referring to a physical resemblance, but a spiritual and moral reflection of His nature.
Here's what that means:
Intellect and Creativity
We can think, reason, plan, and create.
Conscience and Morality
God placed within us an awareness of what is good and evil.
Relationship and Love
We were made to know God, worship Him, and express love.
“We were created to have a relationship with God — to communicate with Him, to love Him, and to be loved by Him.”
Martins added, “This same desire for relationship is reflected in our need for one another — starting from marriage.”
3. The Foundation of Relationship
Marriage reflects the relational nature of God Himself — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — a perfect union in purpose and love.In the same way, God designed marriage as a union of two becoming one, mirroring His divine unity.
Through this relationship, we learn
Sacrifice
“It’s not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18) — so God created companionship.
Service
We serve one another as an expression of love.
Stewardship
God entrusts us to care for each other in marriage.
4. Male and Female: Different Yet One
Genesis 1:27 says, “God created them male and female.” Both reflect the image of God, though in distinct and complementary ways. The man and the woman together reveal the fullness of God’s character — strength and gentleness, leadership and nurture, vision and support.
“God didn’t bless the man alone or the woman alone — He blessed them both.” That blessing is the power to flourish together, not separately.”

5. The Blessing of Marriage
Before giving humanity any command, God blessed them.“And God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply…’” (Genesis 1:28)That blessing still rests on marriage today. It represents divine empowerment — the spiritual equipment to fulfill the assignment of love, unity, and fruitfulness.

The Blessing to Reflect God’s Image on Earth
6. Marriage as the Foundation of Human Flourishing
From marriage, every other form of relationship flows — family, community, leadership, and even society. As Coco said, “Love begins at home. It’s what we learn from our parents — unity, sacrifice, teamwork, and purpose.”Marriage teaches us how to love, how to serve, how to forgive, and how to lead. It’s no wonder that the enemy attacks marriage, because it is the seedbed of everything God calls “good.”
Outcomes
Purpose
We see why we’re together and where God is leading us.
Unity
We no longer live for “me” but for “us.”
Fruitfulness
We multiply spiritually, emotionally, and generationally.
7. Restoring God’s Design Through Christ
Though sin corrupted God’s original design (Genesis 3), redemption came through Jesus Christ.Through Him, we are restored to God’s image and empowered to live out His purpose — including in our marriages.
“Marriage can again be what God intended it to be — through Jesus Christ.”

Marriage Is God’s Plan
So, is marriage truly God’s plan? Absolutely.God created us male and female. He blessed us to multiply. He gave us responsibility, purpose, and partnership.Marriage is not an outdated institution — it is the very blueprint for human flourishing. When we walk in that truth, we experience the beauty, unity, and fulfillment that God designed from the beginning.
